Illmari Tapiovaara Domus chair from 1946 in Ghent

During my recent visit to the Design Museum in Ghent, Belgium I came across this Domus chair by Illmari Tapiovaara. Made from solid wood and form-pressed plywood birch and brass colored metal. It was created as a multipurpose seat for the Domus Academica student housing complex in Helsinki. The first model of this chair was designed with solely wood, the only available material in postwar Finland. It was initially delivered from the factory in pieces for the retailer or end customer to assemble. Tapiovaara was driven to create an ergonomic design which was comfortable and healthy to use.
